Good news everyone, the cause of fibromyalgia has finally been identified and is once and for all officially not “just in the head” of the sufferers.
Fibromyalgia is an insidiously devastating condition, partially due to the constant paid and fatigue it causes, and partially due to the stigma put upon the sufferers by the very doctors they seek treatment with. For some reason, many doctors and health care professionals have insisted that fibromyalgia is all in the head of the sufferer, one of the most common treatments is antidepressants, and when someone tells you for long enough that your crazy and your suffering is all in your head it does lead to depression.
My wife suffers from fibromyalgia. Doctors frequently tell her it doesn’t exist and attempt to give her anti depressants to treat it. She’s almost constantly in pain and it is painful to watch and be unable to help. Her family treats her as if she’s somehow to blame or somehow it’s because of mental problems because they don’t understand it and they’re told by others the same, that it’s all in her head. She is exhausted even after a full nights sleep. Luckily her current Doctor’s PA is understanding and has prescribed a nice combination of pain medicines that makes her day to day life bearable, but even that isn’t enough at times and if she takes more than prescribed she runs out and is in even more pain. She also has to only schedule with her PA, because the regular Dr. is one of those convinced it doesn’t exist and always attempts to lower or take away her pain medication.
Fibromyalgia sufferers have a reduced quality of life in almost all aspects. The hobby’s my wife used to enjoy doing daily she can barely do anymore. The girl I met that used to frolic through the woods, full of life and ambition, after years and years of fighting the pain and stigma is reduced to just getting through each day. Just thinking of the pain she lives with brings me to tears, not to mention the way people treat her and talk to and about her and others who have to live with that suffering. Its become gradually worse over the years and all I can do is just do what I can to make things easier for her.
Spread the word that fibromyalgia is real, there is now a known cause, there can be a treatment, and that people who have it deserve some compassion and understanding instead of shame and ridicule. Whether you or someone you know suffers from it or not, tell your doctor, share with your friends, lets work together to bring this to the light.
